Herein lies the major contention between the two platforms. When registering an account with MTGO, you must make an initial payment of 15 dollars that the game refunds to you in credit that you can only use in game. When you register an account with Untap, all you need to do is verify your email to make sure that you’re not a spam bot and you’re in. First of all, Untap is a completely free to use website. Now that we’ve covered MTGO’s strengths, let’s cover what Untap does better than MTGO. Luckily for Untap, all actions are recorded by the game and show up in the chat log during play so you can monitor your opponents actions. This creates an unspoken contract between players on Untap to agree to not draw extra cards or break rules while they are resolving certain effects during the game. Whenever a card is played in Untap, you must input the commands that result in the resolution of the cards effect. Because Untap is an emulator, everything must be done manually. This means that when you play the game, the rules and card effects are automated by the program itself to ensure that the game is played fairly. Another benefit to using MTGO over Untap is that MTGO is completely automated. Untap has none of these benefits and has never hosted a tournament of its own.

In this championship, players play to win up to 40,000 dollars cash and platinum level pro player status in the Pro Players Club which makes them eligible to be flown out, at the expense of Wizards of the Coast, to Grand Prix’s and Pro Tour’s around the world. MTGO also boasts a competitive scene that is backed up by monetary prizes such as the MTGO Online Championship. In 2007, MTGO claimed that it had 300,000 users worldwide, while Untap can hardly break 150 active users on a good day. Magic the Gathering Online has a much larger user-base than Untap by far. With these introductions done, I will compare and contrast the two websites to evaluate which one is the better platform for playing Magic the Gathering on the internet. The website is moderated by a few admins that check the global chat room for misconduct and is overall a small project that goes unheeded by most. Based on my research from frequenting the website this week, on average there are about 110 users online at any given time. There are even less statistics on how many active users frequent the website. Very little is known about the websites origins and who created the emulator.

In 1999, Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast for 325 million dollars and to this day remains as a subsidiary of Hasbro. MTG was such a resounding success that Wizards was reluctant to run an ad campaign to promote MTG as they could hardly keep up with current demand. All the while they were releasing 3 sets each year to meet with the high demands for cards. The game’s creator, Richard Garfield, worked with a games company known as Wizards of the Coast to develop the game and eventually were granted a patent in 1997 for “a novel method of game play and game components that in one embodiment are in the form of trading cards.” Wizards started the MTG Pro Tour in 1996 for international competition and recognition. Magic: The Gathering is widely known as the first trading card game and the first to pioneer the market on trading card games. Magic: The Gathering is a trading card game that released its first set, Alpha, in the August of 1993.
